On Monday 23rd of March, the French Ministry of Ecology specified that “the waste management sector, whether treating hazardous or non-hazardous waste from households, businesses or even medical waste from hospitals, is still running to ensure waste collection and processing.”
The Ministry took the opportunity to announce a new instruction: for health issue, individuals must now dispose of used tissues, masks and gloves in a dedicated, easy to seal, heavy-duty plastic bag. This bag must be carefully sealed then kept for 24 hours before put into another plastic bag for the main household waste. Under no circumstance can used tissues, masks and gloves be disposed of in recycling bins (packaging, paper, carton, plastic) also called “yellow” bins.
An update is scheduled every day between the French government and the sector as a whole to monitor the situation as it evolves and to take any necessary action.
